Two

We're not new parents anymore, no
But a birthday is also a reminder
Of how vastly different life was
And how it took a while for me to accept reality

A reality that sets in
Shortly after birth
The crowd of medical professionals clears away
Two new parents and the littlest life set to get acquainted

Life's surprises start then
The little one so tired after coming into the world
He sleeps soundly

Then, all the parenting paraphernalia
The bottles, the bassinet, the burp cloths
Baby gets nice and settled in

And slowly, slowly, slowly, it all changes
The sleepless nights fade, the crawling begins
The teeth grow in, no more gummy smile

He stands, and one day it all comes together
Those first hesitant and unsteady steps
A new way to get around

And the words, oh the words.
Mom and Dad can't remember the last quiet day
But it's all right
The house is full of life.

Life and
Blocks and
Cars and
Trains and
Books

Some days are neverending
I think I can't hear another whine
But then we read a story for bed
He's pointing out the colors and the shapes
Getting excited about the letters and numbers
And I can't believe he's mine

Two years old now
The legs are in constant motion
He fills our world with sound
From getting dressed to pjs on
Such a happiness we found
